Hello All!

I've just joined....couldn't resist actually. (There is something about kals that keep me motivated.) Anyway, I'm really looking forward to doing this scarf. It will be my first attempt at cables, believe it or not. I'm just waiting on the lavendar Alpaca yarn I've ordered from Elann. I love all the different scarves that have been posted so far!

Scarf Length

Just wondering how long are most people making their scarves? I understand that it's probably a personal preference, but seeing as how a lot of these are gifts... do you go by skeins instead?

I'm really flying through mine - I love this pattern!

Also, do you wash the finished product before giving it?

Hi! Q about pilling.

Hey there,
I just joined. The IHS will be my second cabling project, I was so surprised upon knitting Coronet how easy cabling is!
So, I'm knitting the scarf for my BIL for Xmas & I am trying to keep gifts very inexpensive this year, so I bought some Lion Brand Wool-ease for it, which I have never used before. I have been hearing that it pills, though! Is it really awful to work with? It feels nice and soft and it's a dark tweedy green I know he will like.
Anyway, I haven't even started, so I am willing to take the LB back & use something nicer if it is really going to pill. Any input?
Thanks!

Irish Commuter Scarf

Well, I got started on this a bit later than I had planned, but it's moving along pretty quickly.

I've been mostly working on this scarf during my Bart commute to work (hence my version of the scarf's name). I'm able to get a single 8-row repeat done during each ride, so you can almost see how many commutes I've made by looking at the cables (kinda like the rings of a tree determine its age).

Number 2

The Long and Winding Scarf Posted by Hello

Because this pattern is so easy and turns out so well, I am making a couple more scarves. This is number two. It's hard to tell here, but it is a denim style wool with white and grey wools. It's Bernat and it is so soft, I may have to buy more of this wool to make something for me :)

Two Coloured Scarf

One Down, Two More to Go Posted by Hello

It's finished! And I am loving it! The colours are great, the pattern looks great and I am happy to give it as a gift. Am I the only one that is far pickier about the work I give away, but I won't always rip back 20 rows on a sweater for myself? Or does that just make me lazy?

Intro

I just joined yesterday. I'd been wanting to make this scarf for a couple weeks now, and had even purchased yarn specifically for a scarf. I woke up yesterday morning, and knew that I just had to cast on. I'm really enjoying this pattern, to the point that it is distracting me from other projects. I'm less than one sleeve away from finishing Klaralund though, so as soon as that is done, I can devote more time to the Irish Hiking Scarf. In the meantime, you can see a picture of yesterday's scarf start on this entry over at my blog (Note you can click on the thumbnail to see a larger picture of the scarf).

Hat to match the Irish Hiking Scarf

I was asked to write up how I was going to adapt the Cornet hat from knitty to go with the Irish Hiking scarf and I am still going to do that....

BUT...My sister brought me home a little magazine called "Knitting Made Easy". She got it in the check out line at wally world. It's put out by the "Best Rrecipes" people. It costs $3.99 and has a hat that has the irish hiking scarf cable in it. Only it's reversed. Its a C3B instead of a C3F. I decided to do that one.

I suggest looking at your local grocery or wally world to find a copy of this little magazine. Theres some other really nice projects in it too. Hope this helps some of you.

FO!

I cast off last night. I ended up using 2 balls of the Wool Ease in the Mink colorway, but I knit it on smaller needles-- I think a size 6-- to increase the likelyhood that my brother will wear it. Hopefully he will!

I know my pictures are dark, but hopefully you can still see them.

The stitch definition isn't fantastic in this yarn, but I think the more rustic look will suit my brother better anyway.

cables are the new black

Hooray! These are my first cables EVER and I am so surprised at how easy they are to do! If you have no idea how to make them, they seem so daunting!

Here's the first cable, and im using some caron simply soft lavendar for the project on size 8 needles. I intend this scarf to be a christmas present! As soon as im done with this one, I plan on making more!! Hooray for cables!

Finished!!

I finished the Irish Hiking Scarf last night. I really like it and may make some more in the future. I am going to be making a matching hat to go with it. I'm going to take Coronet pattern from Knitty and put the Irish Hiking Scarf's cable into it instead of the one in the pattern. That way it will match. I think this will be a christmas gift this year.

Without further ado...

Two skeins of Lion Brand Cotton ease in red. (really..its not day-glo..its red)

Here's a closeup of the cables

Again..its not pink..its red.

Why is red so hard to photograph??

Two Colour Trial

This is my two-toned version of this pattern, which is knitting up quickly. The light colour is actually more beige than shown in this photo, but I like it already. I love that one great pattern can have so many variations depending on the artist who knits it.... Posted by Hello

Cable Success

After a few minor set-backs and starting this project I don't know how many times, I find that I've finally got it and I can't stop!!!! I just want to keep on getting to that next cable "chunk"!

Which one?

Hi All! It's my first post here, and I'm in a bit of a bind - I'm not sure which scarf to continue with. I was going to just stick with the left scarf, which is made with Bernat Denim Style, but I'm not happy with the way the yarn is holding the cables. But of course, the Paton's Classic wool isn't much better. So one of these is headed for the frog pond, I just don't know which one yet.

Joining the knit a long

A new project...how exciting. I'm going to check my yarn right now so I can get started!

Ok..so I have a photo now

Red Lion Brand cotton ease

Thursday, October 07, 2004

Hi there!! I just signed up today! I started my scarf yesterday while my son was going through his speech therapy evaulation. I'm using red cotton ease for mine. I won't have a photo for a while because my camera is broken and I'm using someone elses. Hopefully I can get one in a few days.

Thanks for letting me join!

Excuse my lack of photogenic excellence

I'm not a great picture-taker. Obviously by these pictures following, but there are pictures none the less! And that's something, I think!

Ok, crap detail shot. I swear I'll take a better one later. I swear!

Well that's it for now kiddies! I'll have news about my other projects in my own knitblog if you're interested!
XOXO

my scarf in progress

I posted the same photo on my blog but wanted to join in the fun here too :-) This scarf is really fun and easy enough to do without looking at the pattern.
This is mine using manos:

This is my second knit along and I'm really enjoying seeing everyone elses projects!

Progress pic

Here's a picture of my scarf in progress. I'm using Wool Ease-- I think Mink is the colorway. The flash makes it look redder than it is- it's a nice brown color.

I can't tell you how I look forward to every 8th row-- I love doing the cable row. I'm such a dork!

This can't be right...

I only managed to get a chance to cast on today, so I'm rather behind. Muh. I'm doing my scarf in Lion Brand cotton and being very jealous of those whose scarf recipients (or themselves) are not allergic to wool. I'm only 1/2 a repeat in, but what I'm getting is 9 inches wide! SURELY there's something wrong with this...the pattern says it should be 5 1/2 inches. I know cables pull things in, but that much? I'm not really liking how loose the fabric I'm getting is anyway, so I'll probably go down to 7's or 6's. I know this is a scarf, so it doesn't really matter, I just wanted to feel included. Stupid so-called real life interfering with my knitting...

Lefty Attempts

Are there any other left-handed knitters working on this scarf? I want to be sure I'm following the directions properly, seeing as how I knit "backwards" - I got through the first 8 rows last night and at the end of row 8 I was left with knitting what was on the cable needle. I don't think this is right... not giving up yet, just checking before I create a bigger mess.

Wow!

It seems every time I check my email I have another person requesting to join! If you haven't already, check out the great blogs and LJs of the people in our knitalong. The list keeps growing and growing.

I've been battling what I think is either an ulcer or a mild flu-- major stomach pains, but I did pick up my scarf yesterday and work a couple of repeats. I hope to post a picture soon. It's freezing here in Michigan this morning, I may need to knit a pair of gloves just so I can keep warm!

'ello! Introductions and such are in order, I suppose. Name's Aearrineth (say Erineth!) but you can always just call me Aearrin or Rin if ya like! I'm a 21 (going on 22) year old knit-a-holic. I taught myself how to knit about a year ago, so I don't know all that there is, but I think I'm pretty good considering I didn't have a teacher.
I found the pattern for the Irish Hiking Scarf (and being a little Irish myself I couldn't resist!). I've got this great dark green yarn that I'm going to make it out of. I'm really excited because I'm moving up north in a couple of months.
I'm from Delaware (wee tiny state between Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Common reaction: "Dela-where?" or "What state's that in?" But aaaaaaanywho. Moving back up to the chilly-weather-world from Florida (The hurricanes are just too much for me, and I miss the snow!) So I'll be able to feed my scarf-a-holic nature again! I love scarves! So, this one will be super for my collection!
As soon as I can take a picture I'll post an update as to how far I've gotten along on it! I'm really happy to be working on this, very pretty design!

I cheated, too

I couldn't help myself. I started a week ago. But I'm starting one today, too, and that's the one I'll be working on and posting about here.
